On the bike toolkit

Make sure you have the right tools to deal with what the road throws at you

It’s the question every rider has to address – what are the essential tools to take with you on a ride?

First, assess how much room you have to carry tools. On many bikes, space is limited, affecting your tool selection. Bagger riders, however, have the luxury of bringing additional tools.

Second, it’s important to understand that every bike is unique and requires a different set of tools. For example, you probably don’t need that 5/8” wrench if there are no 5/8” fasteners on your bike.

Third, you need to understand your own limitations on what you can realistically do to repair your bike on the side of the road. So, get familiar with your bike and its particular requirements. If possible, get the bike onto a lift so you have a clear view from all angles. Starting at the front of the bike, look at each component and ask yourself: “If this broke and needed repair, would I have the ability and know-how to take it off and repair it?” If the answer is yes, then make a note of the tools you would need. If the answer is no, then you probably don’t need to pack those tools. Only pack what you need unless you have room to spare. You never know when you may get an opportunity to help out another rider.

Fourth, know your Owner’s Manual inside-out. If something goes wrong, you’ll be in the best position to either fix it or call for more expert help. You can download a copy of the Owner’s Manual to your mobile device to save valuable space on your motorcycle.

Finally, the Harley-Davidson network of dealers and expert service staff is at your disposal if you encounter an issue you can’t fix roadside. As a H.O.G. member, you have access to Roadside Assistance recovery service. Keep the contact number saved in your phone, and check www.hog.com to ensure your coverage suits your expected annual mileage and riding style. Happy riding!
